A Modern Retelling of A Classic Volkswagen Ad Campaign

What’s old will always come back to be new at some point. Some of the most classic things in society are now considered to be the best and most fresh. A Volkswagen ad from the ’90s, “Drivers Wanted,” is making a comeback with a fresh new take from the company to appeal to a modern type of driver.  

The Gold Standard of ’90s Car Ads 

One of the main points of the old “Drivers Wanted” was to showcase how much Volkswagen owners love their cars. Towards the end of some of the ads, a narrator would say, “On the road of life, there are passengers, and there are drivers.” There was a specific advertisement for each Volkswagen model at the time, each showcasing what made that model unique. It was all very ’90s, with lots of subtext, which is making a comeback in the latest campaign.  

A New Take on a Classic Ad Campaign 

To bring the “Drivers Wanted” campaign to a newer audience, Volkswagen worked with ProdCo director Leigh Powis to create “The Great Invitation: Drivers Wanted,” with multiple stories involving different Volkswagen models that are very ’90s in feel and film style, set to House of Pain’s “Jump Around” from 1992.
