The legacy built by the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R continues to grow. These two sports compact hatchbacks have captured the hearts and minds of enthusiasts and journalists worldwide for half a century.
If you peruse Car and Driver’s 10Best lists over the years, you will find the Golf GTI on 19 of them and the Golf R on four. This year, both the Golf GTI and Golf R are on the 2026 10Best cars list for the 20th and fifth time, respectively.
This prestigious list features ten of the magazine’s most favored vehicles they have driven throughout the year. These vehicles are judged on value, fun, and then fulfillment of their mission. Nominated vehicles must have been on the list the year prior, or be all-new or significantly revised. They can also include vehicles that were not available for the previous year’s 10Best process.
These nominees must fall under the $115,000 base MSRP cap set by the magazine. This year, Car and Driver examined 90 vehicles over a two-week period to determine its 10Best cars and trucks/SUVs.
As Car and Driver’s Editor-in-Chief Tony Quiroga explains, “We’ve always loved the [mix of value the] current Volkswagen GTI [offers when it comes to] practicality, performance, and personality, but it’s the interior improvements that Volkswagen made for 2026 that helped land it a spot on the 10Best list. And the [design and looks of the] Golf R [are] practical, but under that conservative shape is a sports car that’ll rip to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.”
There is more to the story when it comes to the 2025 Golf GTI and Golf R. The mid-cycle refresh of the Mk8 generation – called Mk8.5 – delivered on the promise of keeping its leadership among sports compact cars. Both received refreshed exteriors and interiors, along with updated technology. The engine under the hood of the 2026 Golf R is now up to 328 horsepower, with 4Motion all-wheel drive putting that power down to all four corners.
Last year saw the addition of a Black Edition and Euro Style package to the Golf R. For 2026, the latter package removes the standard sunroof and adds European sports seats in cloth, as well as the Akrapovic™ titanium exhaust system.
The 2026 Golf GTI is available in three trims – S, SE, and Autobahn. They offer levels of comfort without compromising their essence. That 241-horsepower turbocharged engine will keep you engaged on the road.
Along with being named MotorTrend’s Car of the Year, the trophy case for the 2026 Golf GTI and Golf R is filling up very nicely. It is a sign that Volkswagen has been building the most exciting duo of sports compacts today – as it has over the past 50 years.
