The average purchase price of a new car, truck, or SUV in the US recently surpassed $50,000. Yes, new cars have more content than ever before, but that doesn’t keep new car prices from slipping beyond many people’s budgets. The alternative has always been used vehicles, but they bring their own concerns. How do you know you aren’t purchasing a problem someone else just dumped? How likely are early repair costs? Team Gillman Volkswagen of Kingwood has a solution to this issue, called the Volkswagen Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program. 

CPO Vehicle Requirements 

Yes, someone owned it before, or it may have been leased. After vehicle leasing became commonplace, CPO programs were initially created to accommodate recent-model, low-mileage leased vehicles that were returned in very good condition.

The first requirement is that all models must be Volkswagen models that are six years old or less. They must also have fewer than 75,000 miles, a clean title, and a CARFAX vehicle history report free of major accidents or defects. Most importantly, the model must pass a 100+ point inspection that covers the drivetrain, brakes, steering, and mechanical issues, as well as several exterior and interior appearance requirements. If a failed inspection point is easily fixed, they will make the repair. If it is more complex, the vehicle will not qualify as a CPO model.  

CPO Warranty 

The inspection is rigorous because each Volkswagen CPO vehicle will come with its own warranty, beyond the original new-vehicle warranty. A CPO vehicle may be covered by a combination of both new-vehicle and CPO warranties, so let’s first review the Volkswagen new-vehicle warranty: 

• 4 years or 50,000 miles of warranty coverage  
• 2 years or 20,000 miles of Carefree Maintenance  
• 5 years of remote access features  
• 8 years or 100,000 miles High-Voltage Battery warranty coverage (EVs)

Fortunately, your Volkswagen CPO warranty begins only after the new car warranty ends. Let’s take a look at the coverage you can expect from each model year:  

• Model year 2020 or later (gas-powered): You are covered by a comprehensive limited warranty of up to 24,000 miles or two years* with your purchase.  
• Electric vehicles model year 2020 and newer: You are covered by a comprehensive limited warranty of up to 36,000 miles or three years* with your purchase.
