Not all family-friendly vehicles are created equal. In fact, while many boast ample seating for several passengers, some make the installation of child safety seats – a necessary tool to ensure our littlest passengers ride safely – an absolute bear.
Recently, Cars.com revisited the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas to check for child seat fitment. It is something its editors proudly do on nearly every vehicle reviewed.
In order to conduct these tests, the editors at Cars.com install various child seats (namely infant seats, convertible rear-facing seats, convertible front-facing seats and booster seats) and give the vehicle a grade, ranging from A to F. These grades are based on how easy and secure child seats can be installed throughout the vehicle. Editors also look at how other passengers can fit in the vehicles alongside any installed child safety seat. Editors also assess the accessibility of LATCH anchor points, which can simplify child safety seat installation.
Using an Atlas Peak Edition model as a test vehicle, Cars.com found the 2026 Atlas did very well overall. It received “A” grades for most tests conducted. Editors also commended the three-place second-row bench seat in the 2026 Atlas Peak Edition, noting it offered three different LATCH anchor points, and accommodated three car seats in the second row.
The fitment of the infant, forward-facing and rear-facing convertible child seats received the highest marks in the second row. These three types of seats were easy to install using the latches.
When it comes to the third row, Cars.com found that access was good. It takes one lever to fold and move the second-row seats forward to gain access in the far back, while another lever can reset the second-row seats back to their exact position.
The forward-facing and booster seats also received high marks in the third row. Again, it is suggested to use the seatbelts and remove the head restraints for the best fitment in this row of seats.
Ensuring the safety of your most precious passengers is a priority. That is why the Atlas offers a lot of space inside for up to seven passengers. With up to 153.7 cubic feet of passenger volume available, there is room for everyone to stretch out inside Atlas.
