This should not surprise anyone, though, as the GTI and Golf R are both often seen as the perfect hot hatches for buyers. This is the third time in its eight generations that the Golf family of performance vehicles has won the prestigious MotorTrend CoTY award, the first time being in 1985 and then again in 2015. The 2026 Volkswagen GTI
The 2026 VW GTI starts from $36,320 and is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with a fast-shifting and smart 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In MotorTrend's hands, this translates to a 0-60 mph time of just 5.8 seconds and a quarter-mile dash of 14.3 seconds at 98.9 mph. The GTI is available only with front-wheel drive.
Practicality Is Just as Important as Performance
But speed isn't all that the GTI is good for. Because it's a hatchback, owners will love the 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. With those seats folded, the GTI offers a crossover-like 34.5 cu.ft. of space. The EPA estimates that the GTI will achieve 24 mpg in city driving, 32 mpg on the highway, and an average of 27 mpg across both driving cycles.
The 2026 VW Golf R
The Golf R is a bit more sporty than the GTI while carrying the same level of usability. With pricing from $50,730, the Golf R features the same turbo-four engine but pumps out 328 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. With its 4Motion all-wheel drive system, MotorTrend says this hottest of hatches will fly from 0 to 60 in only 4.1 seconds on its way to a 12.6-second quarter mile at 110.6 mph. It, too, uses a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Sportier With No Compromise
Fear not, though, because all of that power does not mean that you will pay more at the pump, since the EPA says the Golf R will get you 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, while averaging 25 mpg between the two.
