You may have seen a teaser image of the next-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R on social media recently. While that may be a few years away, there is a lot of speculation about what it will look like, what kind of performance it will yield, and what technology will be added to our award-winning “hot hatch” duo.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Golf GTI to the world. To mark the occasion, the creative minds at Volkswagen presented three concept vehicles from its history that point to a potential future for this seminal sports compact.
A Golf GTI has always been powered by a four-cylinder engine. There was once a time when that engine was supplanted by the VR6, a 15-degree block that staggered all six cylinders into a compact layout. What if there were a Golf GTI with a 12-cylinder engine?
That engine was installed in a Mk5 Golf GTI over the rear axles. The engine was a Volkswagen Group design similar to the VR6, bored out to 6.0 liters. Ultimately, that engine put down 650 horsepower. Back in 2007, Volkswagen tested it to go 0-60 MPH in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 202 MPH.
In 2013, the Los Angeles Auto Show featured the Design Vision GTI Concept. The rakish five-door hatchback was actually a design study for the Mk7 Golf GTI. The concept also had insane power from a 500-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, while sporting air intakes and aerodynamic aids to keep the power in check.
The wildest concept ever made was the 2014 GTI Roadster, which takes the basic idea of the hot hatch, lowers the entire body while removing the roof, and adds scissor-type doors, making it a sleek and fun machine. With only two seats, this roadster concept was powered by a 500-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It was so astounding to look at that it was featured in the Gran Turismo 6 video game.
Not everything from these three concepts made it onto any production Golf GTI. The original “hot hatch” inspired the creative thinkers at Volkswagen to consider what it could become. Over these past 50 years, the Golf – and Rabbit - GTI made lots of dreams come true. While Americans waited a few years for our own sports compact hero, we were never disappointed. The memories we had are still being made today in every generation of the Golf GTI on the road across the Houston area and beyond.
