The Nürburgring is a place where motorsports dreams can come true. One of the ultimate measures of driver and machine endurance is seeing how quickly the pair can lap the grueling 12.994-mile Nordschleife course in Germany, but how well they can do so over the span of 24 hours.
Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, to learn Volkswagen is bringing its racing efforts to the famed Nürburgring 24 Hours race next year by entering a specially-prepared Volkswagen Golf R.
The 24-hour endurance race is not run on the Nordschleife course. Instead, it’s held on a modified version of the shorter Grand Prix part as part of the FIA’s World Endurance Championship series. Of course, “shorter” is still subjective – the 24 Hour course still winds its way through the forests of the Black Hills and is a “mere” 15.7 miles long. For context, the famed oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home of the famed Indianapolis 500 race) is 2.5 miles long.
This forthcoming race-spec Golf R is a partnership between was created by Volkswagen and Max Kruse Racing. Based on the 4Motion driven Golf R, the Nürburgring entry celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Volkswagen R brand – fitting, as Volkswagen maintains the “R” stands for racing. The new racing car replaces the outgoing Golf GTI Clubsport race car that ran the ‘Ring over the past few years, and was recently previewed as a static display at this year’s 24 Hours race to garner interest.
Volkswagen says this new race car also celebrates the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Golf R32, which debuted in 2002. This powerhouse sport compact hatchback broke new ground by adding a VR6 engine, along with an early version of the 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Originally developed as a racing car to run in various touring car classes across Europe. However, enthusiasts flocked to the R32 with its enhanced handling and traction made for the track.
In the U.S.A., the R32 has evolved into today’s Golf R, and is nothing short of a sports compact icon with true staying power in a changing marketplace. While some sport compact rivals have come and gone over that time, the 2026 Golf R continues to set a high standard for performance through advanced engineering.
You may see some Golf R and GTI models running at a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) or a National Auto Sports Association {NASA) event running here in Texas, and for good reason – both models have a reputation for not only being fun to drive on the open road, but competitive on the closed circuit, too.
