Three 2026 Volkswagen models named Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Picks
April 15 2026 - Team Gillman Volkswagen

At Team Gillman Volkswagen, we are proud of the models we sell. However, it is always nice when the experts agree with us, especially when they praise a vehicle for its entertainment value alongside its more practical features. That is why we are proud to announce that Car and Driver has named the 2026 Volkswagen Golf GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan to the 2026 Editors’ Choice list.

The Car and Driver 2026 Editors’ Choice list features 131 vehicles selected from over 450 models tested annually across 47 segments. Selection is based on rigorous instrumented testing, editors' assessments of each vehicle’s mission fulfillment, value, driving enjoyment, and market segment ratings. To win, a vehicle must earn at least 9 out of 10 stars from Car and Driver’s reviewers. Only 2026 models with editor-driven experience are eligible for Editors’ Choice. “We are delighted to see three of our vehicles named to the Editors’ Choice list,” said Petar Danilovic, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing & Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “These vehicles offer a combination of smart packaging, great driving dynamics, and a suite of IQ.DRIVE® advanced driver assistance features, all at a great value. We’re proud of these vehicles and are honored to see them recognized by the editors at Car and Driver.”

Golf GTI

The Golf GTI is one of two Golf variants that accounted for half of the winners in the Sport Compact Car Category. The model was praised as “a rare combination of performance and refinement for a relatively affordable price.” They note that this originator of the hot-hatch genre has been the standard for almost a half century, and that the years have “only bolstered its position as the ultimate amalgam of driver enjoyment and boxy practicality.”

The GTI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that delivers lightning-quick gear changes before sending power to the front wheels. They wrote in their summary: “With ample cargo space, a spacious cabin, and performance aplenty, the Volkswagen Golf GTI upholds its reputation as the archetypal hot hatch.”

Golf R

The higher-performance half of the Golf model line also made the list. The Golf R takes the GTI and simply adds more. The 2.0-liter inline-4 is tuned to 328 horsepower. Like the GTI, this engine is paired with the 7-speed dual clutch automatic, but power is now sent to all four wheels through the VW 4Motion system. The system features a rear differential that will distribute torque between the left and right rear wheels as needed for improved handling. The Golf R retains the spacious cabin and cargo-carrying ability of the GTI, and with the 4Motion system, it can really take the place of an SUV for anyone who wants to stay on the road and have fun doing it.

Tiguan

The Tiguan is the Volkswagen entry into the ultra-competitive compact crossover SUV segment. The Tiguan completely fulfills its role as the only European compact SUV from a non-luxury brand, where “It lost none of its trademark European flair in its 2025 update. Car and Driver summarized what they like about the Tiguan as “More fun to drive than most of its rivals, strong optional turbo engine, plenty of space for passengers and cargo.”

All Tiguan models include comfort features like a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, and the Driving Experience Dial for controls. Premium options add a 15-inch display, wood accents, perforated leather seats, and a 3-zone climate control. Car and Driver particularly liked the SEL R-Line Turbo with its 268 turbocharged engine and standard all-wheel drive.

All three of these models provide practical daily transportation while making you feel like you are in something special every time you get behind the wheel. If that appeals to you, visit Team Gillman Volkswagen to test drive all three.
