If you are looking for a compact sedan with European design values as well as affordability, the Volkswagen Jetta model line is your go-to. But there is also the Jetta GLI. It may seem like just a Jetta trim level. However, the Jetta GLI deviates significantly from the Jetta model line, so we at Team Gillman Volkswagen list it separately in our research lineup and inventory search.
What They Have in Common
The GLI is clearly based on the Jetta. As such, they both share the same general design, exterior, and interior dimensions, including the generous 37.4 inches of rear legroom and 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space that naturally expand when you fold down the rear seats.
You will find the same attractive dash, with some variances in the details, with more heavily bolstered front seats on the GLI. Both models also come standard with the IQ.Drive suite of safety and driver assistance technologies, which include:
- Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind Spot Monitoring
- Rear Traffic Alert
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Lane Keeping Assist
Drivetrain
This is the most obvious difference between the two models. While both feature front-wheel drive and turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, the Jetta S, SE, Sport, and SEL have 1.5 liters of displacement with 158 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. of peak torque at 1,750 rpm with the power managed by a conventional 8-speed automatic. By contrast, the GLI has the 2.0-liter engine from the Golf GTI, producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. of torque peaking at 1,700 rpm. The engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, with paddle shifters and lightning-fast gear changes.
Chassis
Both models feature German attention to ride and handling characteristics. While the Jetta models are tuned for greater comfort that absorbs pavement irregularities and offers light, easy-to-operate steering, the GLI starts with a Sport-tuned suspension that replaces the torsion beam rear suspension of the Jetta with an independent multi-link design, providing improved control over bumps in curves. Additionally, it includes Multimode DCC® and Adaptive Chassis Control, allowing drivers to choose between Comfort, Sport, and Individual modes to adjust suspension firmness and vehicle dynamics.
The GLI also features a limited-slip differential, which maintains power to the outside front wheel during fast turns, thereby lightening the load on the inner wheel. For more confident braking during high-performance driving, the GLI has larger brake rotors, with front discs increasing from 11.3 to 13.4 inches and rear discs expanding from 10.3 to 11.8 inches. While it doesn't necessarily improve performance, the brakes of the GLI also sport bright red calipers. These calipers are visible behind standard 18-inch wheels that fit wider tires, compared to the 16- and 17-inch wheels available on the Jetta, although the SEL model also comes with 18-inch wheels.
Cabin
Inside, the Jetta GLI is equipped similarly to the Jetta SEL, with features like leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable driver seat with memory, Digital Cockpit Pro, wireless phone charging, and ambient interior lighting. The Jetta GLI has its own steering-wheel controls, a black headliner, metal pedal surfaces (also on the Sport), and other sport-themed details.
Pricing
While the interior and exterior details can be typical of a lineup’s sport model, it is the extensive drivetrain and chassis differences that set the Jetta GLI apart from the rest of the Jetta lineup. Naturally, that comes at a higher price. While the Jetta model line’s MSRPs start at $23,995 and top out at $29,995 for the SEL, the Jetta GLI Autobahn (the only trim level) starts at $33,745.
Both models offer great value and have a refined appearance that punches above their weight in the compact sedan category. If you live anywhere in the Northern Houston area, check them both out at Team Gillman VW.
