The new Volkswagen Tiguan is already sparking a lot of conversations. Our SUV offers more than ever before, including enhanced performance, practicality, technology, and style. Recently, Autoblog compared the newest Tiguan with the equally new 2026 Subaru Outback to see what the differences are between the two. Here is what they found.  

First off, the Outback grew in height, width, and length over the outgoing model. The Subaru also grew itself out of the segment where it once competed with the Tiguan. The advantage of the Tiguan's size is its overall nimbleness. You can easily park one in tighter spots on the street. The benefit is noticeable with about five inches between the two. Let's not forget that the Tiguan received more praise for its design. It is certainly sleeker than the Subaru. 

When this comparison was made, Volkswagen had just announced the new SEL R-Line Turbo model added to the 2026 Tiguan lineup. In effect, both SUVs offer two internal combustion power options. The latest upgraded 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the 2026 Tiguan is rated at 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The standard 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is rated at 201 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The Tiguan has more standard power than the Outback.   

Volkswagen is a leader in in-vehicle technology. The latest Tiguan has added more features to create a better driving experience. For example, the Tiguan features a larger set of center display touchscreens. At 12.9 inches, the standard screen is larger than the only screen available on the Outback. Choosing the SEL R-Line will increase the screen size to 15 inches. Our top-of-the-line trim also adds a head-up display to augment our 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro. This fully digital instrument cluster is standard on all Tiguan trim levels.  

Technology is not the only advantage you will see in the Tiguan. Just feel the quality and materials of the cabin. There is also a 10-point, full back massage available, along with the Atmosphere feature. By selecting the Driver Experience Dial, you can customize the mood of your Tiguan by adjusting the ambient lighting and audio settings.  

However, the most significant advantage the 2026 Tiguan has over the new Outback is value. With the 4Motion all-wheel drive system, the 2026 Tiguan is still less expensive by almost $2,700 MSRP. Even our most expensive Tiguan costs less than the comparable Subaru.
