In Texas, not only do we love our pickup trucks, but we also want to do more with them. Towing is one thing we love doing. There is nothing like the sight of a big truck with a trailer behind it. There’s another vehicle that loves towing as much as trucks do: SUVs. One question we get from customers is, "Can you tow with a Volkswagen SUV?" The answer would be “yes.”  

The obvious SUV with towing capabilities is the 2026 Atlas. It can pull up to 5,000 pounds with a braked trailer on the SE with Technology model and up. A trailer hitch is also standard on these trim levels. On the SE model, you are limited to a 2,000-pound capacity once you install an aftermarket hitch. The preparation kit is already equipped on this trim level.  

The 2026 Atlas Cross Sport also has the same towing capacity and hitch setup as the three-row Atlas. What makes it all work comes down to the low-end grunt of the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine on both the 2026 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, rated at 273 pound-feet of torque.  

Looking at these numbers, it is clear that the 2026 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are the best Volkswagen models to tow. However, not everyone has at least a 2,000-pound load to carry with them behind their vehicle. For example, the 2026 Tiguan with the 4Motion all-wheel drive can tow up to 1,800 pounds. Front-drive models can tow up to 1,500 pounds.  

You can even tow with our electric vehicles. The 2026 ID.4 with the 4Motion all-wheel drive system can tow up to 2,700 pounds with a braked trailer. Rear-drive, single-motor models have a maximum rating of 2,200 pounds. You can tow an unbraked trailer with your 2026 ID.4 up to 1,650 pounds in both motor configurations.  

The 2025 ID.Buzz with 4Motion all-wheel drive has a maximum towing rating of 3,500 pounds with a braked trailer. Single-motor, rear-drive models can tow up to 2,600 pounds with the same type of trailer. Unbraked trailers have a maximum towing rating of up to 1,650 pounds.  

If you do not see your model listed here, Volkswagen does not recommend towing with it. Those models include the 2026 Taos, 2026 Jetta, 2026 Jetta GLI, 2026 Golf GTI, and 2026 Golf R.  

The key thing to know before you hitch a trailer to your Volkswagen is that it can handle the weight behind it. Exceeding the maximum stated ratings of your vehicle can cause issues with your driveline and the chassis of your Volkswagen. Before you hitch up, know your towing capacity and plan to manage the load accordingly.
