With the average new car price hovering between $49K and $50K, a new car may seem out of reach for many shoppers. However, the website Carsoup.com recently reviewed the 2026 Jetta and found that it just may be the vehicle for those looking for practical, economical, and comfortable transportation without subjecting themselves to a previous owner’s wear and tear. Carsoup.com leads off with price and value, noting the Jetta has a base price of $25,270, including destination, which is under half the average new-car figure. Editors point out that it “…isn’t the flashiest choice in the compact sedan segment” but notes Volkswagen “quietly built a car that quietly does everything well without trying too hard to impress.” Put simply: Jetta delivers an incredible value to first-time new car buyers or other budget-conscious shoppers.
It starts with the powertrain. The standard 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 produces 159 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Those aren’t high-performance numbers these days, but when combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission, you’ll have plenty of power whether you’re driving around town or merging onto the freeway onramp. Meanwhile, Jetta delivers an EPA estimated 29 mpg in the city and an even more outstanding 40 mpg on the highway, all without resorting to the complexity of a hybrid drivetrain or the quirky mannerisms of a continuously-variable (CVT) transmission. As Carsoup.com points out, “Real-world [Jetta] owners report getting close to these numbers, which means your actual fuel costs should match what you calculated when budgeting for the car—a rare treat in today's market.”
Meanwhile, the Jetta is simply a good sedan. The rear seats offer 37.4 inches of legroom, which is enough for anyone without a basketball scholarship to sit in comfort. The notion of a trunk may seem antiquated in this SUV-centric era, but its 14.1 cubic feet is plenty of space for groceries, routine shopping, and weekend getaways, while the 60/40 split-folding rear seatback helps accommodate larger items.
The Jetta interior is handsome, with that Germanic air of no-nonsense competence. The 8-inch center display is big enough to show everything you need, and an 8-inch digital cockpit display for the driver is standard. The driver’s display expands to 10.25 inches on upper trims, where it can combine driver information with a navigation map if desired. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and rain-sensing wipers are additional standard niceties, as is the IQ.Drive suite of safety and driver assistance technologies, including:
- Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
- Blind Spot Monitoring
- Rear Traffic Alert
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Lane Keeping Assist
There are four trim levels in the Jetta model line, with the SEL at the top, featuring leather seating in the first and outboard rear seats, a premium audio system, the aforementioned configurable digital cockpit, a sunroof, and plenty more.
