All models were tested with AWD. The lineup included five hybrid models and three conventional gas-powered drivetrains. Each model was tested consecutively on the same drive loop to evaluate overall driving performance, comfort, usability, interior quality, and other factors. Additionally, the contestants were taken on a roughly 220-mile highway trip to gauge real-world gas mileage, measure cargo space behind the backseat, check child-safety seat compatibility, and rate value based on the features offered for the price.
The $45,000 target price enabled Cars.com to test the top model of the Tiguan, which rang in at $45,410, including the destination. The Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 producing 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, peaking at 1,900 rpm. Great Comfort
Judges considered the front and rear seats of the Tiguan the most comfortable, praising the massaging front seats and the spacious backseat. “The Tiguan might just have the nicest, most spacious, most comfortable backseat in the group,” said Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman. “I could ride all day in the back of this thing without complaint.”
Near-Luxury Interior
The two-tone quilted-leather upholstery and real wood trim, was described as creating a a near-luxury ambiance that other models did not match.
Quiet
Consistent with its luxurious interior, judges rated the interior of the Tiguan the quietest of the group.
Fun-to-Drive
The SEL R-Line Turbo engine was found to provide excellent power as well as an “impressive balance of comfort and confidence.”
Car-seat Convenience
Cars.com has established itself as the authority of car seat installation tests, which is quite appropriate for a category that is popular with growing families. “Tiguan was the only one without any fitment or usability deductions.”
Screen Tech
Tiguan is equipped with both a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a 15.0-inch center touchscreen, which the testers found to respond quickly.
That said, nothing in life is perfect, and Cars.com had a few suggestions for Volkswagen to consider when refining the Tiguan further down the road. The Tiguan obviously did not have the fuel mileage of the hybrid models. Editors also wished some of the controls worked differently, some of the vehicles had more cargo space, and the high fun-to-drive rating meant that some models had a softer ride. But overall, the Tiguan came still came out on top of its field.
